Capturing Ideas
Method 1: Emoji Reaction (Recommended)
The fastest way to capture any message as an idea:
- 1.Find a message with an idea, feature request, or bug report
- 2.React to it with the 💡 (lightbulb) emoji
- 3.IdeaLift captures the message and replies with a confirmation
Pro tip: Anyone in your server can react to capture ideas. The original author gets credit, and the person who reacted is tracked too.
Method 2: Capture Command
Use the slash command to summarize a conversation:
/idea capture 15Summarizes the last 15 messages into a single idea
This is great for capturing longer discussions or when you want AI to extract the key points from a conversation thread.

Bot Permissions
IdeaLift requests minimal permissions:
- ✓Read Messages/View Channels - See messages in channels where IdeaLift is added
- ✓Send Messages - Reply with confirmation when ideas are captured
- ✓Read Message History - Access messages for the /idea capture command
- ✓Add Reactions - React to confirm idea capture
- ✓Use Application Commands - Enable /idea slash commands
Privacy: IdeaLift only processes messages you explicitly capture. We don't store or monitor your general server activity.
Best Practices
💡Create a Dedicated Ideas Channel
Consider creating a #ideas or #feature-requests channel where community members can post suggestions. This makes it easier to review and capture ideas.
📋Use Forum Channels
Discord forum channels are great for structured feedback. Each post becomes a thread, making it easy to capture complete discussions.
👥Train Your Moderators
Let your moderators know about the lightbulb reaction. They can help capture good ideas from community conversations that might otherwise be missed.
Troubleshooting
Bot not responding to reactions
Make sure IdeaLift has permission to read messages in the channel. Check Server Settings → Integrations → IdeaLift to verify permissions.
"Server not connected" error
Use /idea connect to link your Discord server to an IdeaLift workspace. A server admin needs to complete this step.
Commands not showing up
Discord may take a few minutes to register commands after adding the bot. If commands still don't appear, try removing and re-adding the bot.
Can't capture from private channels
IdeaLift needs to be added to private channels explicitly. Go to channel settings → Edit Channel → Permissions and add the IdeaLift bot.
